Ok. I didn’t have a garden last year-not really. I had some tomatoes and little things, but not a real garden. With gas prices the way they are right now, I’m thinking GARDEN! I almost want to plant one in the country, but it wouldn’t be feasible-60 miles away and if it is hot and dry, there is no one there to water it.
So, what should I plant? I’m the only one in the house who likes tomatoes, and everyone else likes cucumbers (they don’t like me). There are cucumber bushes, but I’ve never had much luck with them. Bell and hot peppers are usually easily grown in my little space, so they are in. I have grown squash and okra and other things in the past, but it’s a lot of work. I’m hoping that there are some family members here that are willing to pitch in since I cannot do much of it anymore.
So, what are you planning to grow this spring and summer? And, do you start from seeds or do you buy plants?
Happy Gardening!

It’s difficult for me to do the hard physical work of gardening so I’ll just be planting some basil plants from the nursery (and always see a few other herbs I want to try), keeping up with the rest of the herbs that come back every year, and maybe planting some seeds for Roma green beans. My husband always had a huge area of the garden devoted to these beans which are flat and cook up quickly in a steamer. They’re also impossible to find in the stores or farm markets. They’re so good with new potatoes sauteed in a little olive oil and butter.

Lillian, that sounds great. I haven’t ventured into many herbs though I love fresh seasoning, and I love homegrown green beans of most any sorts but especially the long flat ones-my first foods were grits and homegrown beans. My family canned beans, peaches, and lots of pickles. We froze most everything else. I didn’t know for a long time that you could buy vegetables (in a metal can) from the store 🙂 Thanks for the potato and bean suggestion. I’ll give it a try and see how that goes over with the rest of the family. Take care!
Wow, how’ I miss this post? Let’s see, I planted cucumbers both kinds (I prefer burpless) most don’t make it out of the garden I eat them as fast as they grow! Green beans, tomatoes, loads of tomatoes! Green peppers, onions and this year I’m trying potatoes again…
The chickens love fresh veggies too so I may start some zucchini.. Usually I start everything from seed directly in the ground!
That sounds great! I’ve never tried the burpless cukes, but they are on my list now. Thanks. I have no patience with onions or potatoes, but a friend suggested trashbag potatoes. We have limited space in town-miss the country in that respect. Yeah, chickens love those veggies. Good luck!
