Compassion

There is a young lady I know who is just as sweet as she can be. I’ve known her for more than 20 years and think the world of her. Hopefully our paths have many people like her who enrich our lives. She makes life more valuable by just knowing her especially when people are not quite so nice such as the following…

The other night I got into a discussion with a guy who was trying to shame someone on social media. He called a person gay and started telling the person how God doesn’t accept gays, etc. You may know the drill. “You are sinning against God.” Well, that’s about the nicest thing he has to say.

This guy makes it his mission to go after people who he thinks are less holy than him – the less righteous in his eyes. Most all of the people he attacks are not gay but that doesn’t stop his hatred and awful attacks. He enjoys it and then he has the audacity to shout he is “Christian” and that others are not.

He mentioned that “gays” have more depression, commit more suicide, do more drugs, and have more health issues than heterosexuals. He’s lost by the way if he believes all of this of which he does. I had to point out that it is people like him who contribute to depression and suicide by telling them how awful they are and that they have no hope for eternal life — that they are unholy and all of this garbage. He firmly believes he is pointing out “truth.” The quoted words are his.

He’s not the only person that goes after and attacks others while proclaiming himself a Christian. I like to call him a Pharisee but that is quite insulting to the Pharisees – my apologies. I’ve not always been the way I am today and that’s a good thing. It shows that I have grown. Growing up with absolutes makes life almost impossible.

You know what is a “sin?” The young lady’s father who doesn’t speak to her because she is in fact gay. He wants her to attend a certain church so they can pray the gay away. Now, that’s a sin.

I wish people would quit judging others. It is not their job in life. If you choose to believe in a certain faith, please be kind to others. For those people who call themselves Christians and condemn and say people are going to hell, I will forever stand with the people they condemn. If you read the Bible carefully you will see Jesus did that very thing.

There are “Christian” evangelists who are leading the call against people who are gay and other parts of the LGBTQ community. They call their followers to push against the “sin” and to rise up but in fact they are calling their followers to push against people. Listen up, if you feel this way, read the Bible and find that Jesus was against the law condemning people. He took the sides of the people in need – against the bullies. Love supersedes (Mosaic) law by his own admission. Perhaps it is because if you put yourself in the position of others, then you will not be so quickly to condemn since he called for people to love others as ourselves. Then look at what was reiterated over and over – humility. The last will be first and the first will be last. Being humble should be a daily challenge for all who spend their waking hours condemning others.

My life is better today for all of the “gay” people I have known through the years. If you say or think EWWWW, then you might need to start thinking about people as people and not what they do when you don’t see them. That’s about as nice as I can put it.

Happy Gardening and please treat others in the way you would like to be treated! 🙂

Each day I’m a little more embarrassed about my president but today was hurtful. I know it seems a small thing but it’s Friday and the end of two very bad weeks from this administration. It’s just too much to take. People will say I’m picking but it’s the overall lack of respect for others that gets me about this administration and president in particular. I shouldn’t be surprised. They did say they hate being politically correct which I just thought was being human and decent. Oh well.

I was always told that you can tell who is a gentleman if the man holds the door open or allows the woman to walk through first or opens the car door and such. Now, I know there are some women who might argue against this type of behavior but men should still offer and not feel hurt if the woman turns him down or says for him to go first. Many women are trying to be courteous though some might take offense. Me, I say thank you. Anyway, it looks bad when a man doesn’t do these things especially in public. Case in point is our president.

You may argue against this but most men would allow their wife to enter the building before them. They would even open the door for their spouse and anyone else as a gesture of good etiquette. If you can’t treat your wife with decency then I know you won’t treat anyone else with decency but then again, anyone caught saying the things he has said is just trash I don’t care what excuse you give.

Not shaking Chancellor Merkel’s hand today was just awful but what’s worse is the posture of this man and the way he came across before the press was asked to leave. You may say this was an informal time and all is good and I will say, bollocks. BBC World tweeted a link to their story and asked about the body language. Here is a shot.

She was sitting with legs crossed and hands together. Trump was sitting lunging forward over his knees with hands pressed together. He was frowning most of the time and she had a light-hearted smile. Someone in the room asked if they would do a handshake. With no response from Trump, the chancellor asked him and was ignored. Ok…

What does this mean? Even though her legs were crossed, she was relaxed – comfortable. You could tell by her shoulders. I would add that she seemed cautious but most likely she was in her comfort posture before the public. She didn’t seem uptight but at ease. Trump was tense, rigid, frowning. In some ways, he looked fuming. He was not comfortable in the situation. When she addressed him, he would not face her and acted like she wasn’t there. That was really awful. This was more than an innocent gaffe. He looked like Mommy just told him he could not have dessert until he ate all of his vegetables. He really looked like he was pitching a temper tantrum.

The home country (the US in this situation) should make the effort to create an atmosphere comfortable for the visiting dignitary. This wasn’t happening in the room at the time but she has come to the US on several occasions to meet with the sitting president. This was not her first rodeo. So often during the debates, we are asked who won the debate. Clearly, Chancellor Merkel was in control of this room. She didn’t flaunt it. She wasn’t overbearing. But Trump behaved very poorly and it embarrasses me.

Would you stop?

Someone is stopped by the side of the road in need of help. They could be anyone you want them to be. You decide to stop. Do you ask them what their political preferences are? What about their religious beliefs? Do you ask if they are married, have been married, divorced, etc? See where I am headed? I see someone who needs my help, I don’t hesitate and say someone else can help them. For example, a man in the neighborhood fell off his tractor in a ditch and the tractor fell on top of him. I think I wrote about this in my blog. He was in need of help. I stopped. The girls and I pulled the man to safety. It was automatic.

Now, what if the person doesn’t look the same as us? What if they are one of “those” people? I don’t know what one of “those” people are but I had friends who looked at those they didn’t accept as “those” people. That is how they referred to them — as THOSE people. Do you stop and help then? Do you make excuses? What makes you help or not help?

I’ve picked up people walking the road who needed help. Sometimes I’m by myself and sometimes not. I don’t always do it and I kick myself when I don’t. On more than one occasion we were returning home with the car full of stuff (groceries or what-have-you) and there was no room so I didn’t stop but I felt bad that I didn’t. I try to console myself by saying I had an excuse. I did but that shouldn’t be my go-to thing. It’s easy to find excuses why we can’t do something.

I wonder if the political climate is causing us to not reach out to others. People will always be in need. That’s why we are here – to always help. It doesn’t matter what the person’s background is. It doesn’t matter what their beliefs are. It only matters if we are willing to treat another as a human being.

Unoriginal

I envy people who can write words on the page that come together like a joyous song telling a story. I can’t do that. I’m not a poet and am limited in my writing capabilities but it doesn’t stop me from desiring to tell a story. In school, I absolutely hated writing. Being told by a writing teacher in sixth grade that my thoughts were unoriginal didn’t help so it was sheer shock that I landed in an honors writing course in college. It was tough—good—but a challenge. I learned quite a bit but have since forgotten more than I think I acquired. It’s true that one must keep in practice as for a number of things. I’m way out of practice. 🙂

A couple of years ago I envisioned a tale — more movie-like than anything else. I didn’t see it as a book of words but I started to write about it. I knew where I wanted to end up…I started with the ending and gave more substance as I went along until I got back to the beginning. That project is fueled by a collection of music pieces. I like it because it has a bit of history in it. Like I said, it’s more movie-like. I can see the scenes like they are real and I can almost touch them in my mind. Gives me goosebumps. It’s not finished… 😀 Just like my life – so many unfinished things.

Most of my writing has been at command – not for fun or entertainment. We are all different. Some people have their muses and they continue to write as long as they are moved to do so. I say this all because I realized people write from varying perspectives. Some choose to tell a story of what they know. It can be reality based. Some writers can command characters they create to elaborately unite for a theatrical composition. The words come to life with no or little struggle. There is much power in this because not only do you create a story but you are in command of how you want the reader to absorb each scene.

I don’t know why but I began to write several weeks ago. Well, that’s not true. I needed an escape. Fantasy is so much more fun than reality. Unlike the previous project, this one starts at a particular place, with certain people/characters. I don’t really have an ending. I’ve enjoyed taking the characters through different situations, adding locations, adding characters, and doing research for certain parts for which I needed more information.

I envision the story in my mind and write the words down. Certain parts have to be in a particular place so I write them in and then go back and fill in between the points like drawing a line on a dot-to-dot picture. I only hope that if I publish it, that people will be able to see the picture that I have drawn and maybe it will make just a bit of sense. What is ironic about all of this is that this story today is not far from the story I wrote for my sixth grade teacher that she labeled unoriginal. Hehehe. This is real life. Some things aren’t original and the really good ones can be repeated… Ok, that’s my take on it. 😀

I’m so sorry!

I want to formally apologize for my country. I am sorry that we—the US—look like the selfish fools that we have become. We are not all like what is being portrayed but many are. Look at who is in the Whitehouse. Many of us are busy trying to make the world a better place for everyone and not just a chosen few but it’s like in school when you have one or two bullies in the class that cause chaos and mess everything up for everyone. That’s us right now.

I hang my head in shame for what my president and his administration are doing. No, it is no being blown out of proportion. These are heinous acts against humanity.  I’m not going to sit here and sling blame at everyone like some are doing. I believe we have responsibility and therefore the actions of the few will have consequences for the many and not just those of us in the US but all across the globe.

I was horrified to watch the events unfold of the past week or so. I can’t tell you how much it tears me up. A phoenix is a mystical bird who rises up from the ashes—one who is reborn. We weren’t in the ashes when this administration began but we are hurdling there quickly now. I suffered at the hands of a narcissist but this narcissist that is leading us is the worst I have ever seen—one that has psychopathic tendencies. Dangerous. In order for a phoenix to rise, we must first die and that’s not acceptable in my opinion.

I just wanted to say that I am so very sorry for the actions of my country’s leaders. We have a choice each day that we get up—to do good or to not. Right now, we aren’t doing good things. We are being selfish ingrates.

I can’t say Happy Gardening so I will just say again that I am sorry!

I love science

Science is one of those things we can’t live without. I love science. Who doesn’t? It’s the understanding of the world around us from simple things to more complex ones. When we better understand our world and the universe, everything seems much less complex.

science-image

Since science involves knowledge, this knowledge needs to be shared. If one person only has the knowledge, what good is science? Nothing really because our world will still rotate and revolve around the sun and our solar system will still spin in the galaxy while the galaxy—what we call the Milky Way Galaxy—travels in the universe. Light energy will still travel at the same speed whether we are aware of it or not and sounds will still make a noise whether we understand wave science or not. Our recognition and acknowledgment isn’t a prerequisite.

I like to deal in some absolutes in life. Science helps to give me those absolutes even if we only discuss theories. It’s much like geometry. You start with a point and from a point you establish a line and from that line you know another line exists and from lines we have planes and so forth. It may all seem undefinable at first but then you learn it’s more than just symbols on paper or computer because it explains everyday life. Same with science—yes I realize that geometry is a tool we use in science JIC I need to say this. We can examine the smallest of particles, observe them in their natural environment, and even do studies that change their environment to see how they react. Repeating these experiments often enough, we learn what suppositions and what hypotheses hold true.

We know for a fact that the earth is not flat and it is not the center of the universe nor does our solar system revolve around us. We know that. It’s not some theory. Just like we know dinosaurs existed but are gone today even though some of their relatives exist. We know they were here. We also know that the earth is more than a few million years old. We know this because we have amassed much information digging through layers here on earth, studying the smallest particles, understanding where elements are found and where they came from, etc. This is more than theory. So people who want to squash science because they don’t like to hear the results do so because they don’t like the reality. No, not an alternate reality. There is no such thing in our reality. It doesn’t fit their specific paradigm.

I’ll agree that there is some science left up to interpretation but it’s not what people are squabbling about. Black holes fall into this category. I know people want to believe that we were put on separate continents and that our skin color didn’t change but we weren’t put there. We migrated there through needs such as searching for food and better climate but also our desire to explore and find out more. It’s natural for humans to want to learn more about who we are and what the past holds. Through time, we as humans or more likely, our ancestors, adapted to the environments. We changed so we don’t all look the same. Evolution to me is not a theory but a fact.

If we continue to believe in things that are not true and continue to label what we have indeed found to be true theories, we are dumbing down the masses. Science is suffering which makes all of us suffer. Again, the earth is not flat. It is older than some 6000 years as some profess. Dinosaurs were not put on a boat to be saved some 4000+ years ago. Didn’t happen. Millions of years have passed since the dinosaurs and other animals and fauna were wiped out. We know this from the K-T or K-Pg boundary. (You know I love this about world geology—the boundary layer. It’s one of the most fascinating things to me for our history. You can see it and touch it. It’s physical.) Humans as we are today did not exist at the same time as dinosaurs. I don’t care how many science fiction books and movies portray it differently, it just didn’t happen.

As we study what is in our past, we are hoping to see a glimmer of what will be in our future. We particularly would like to be able to stop something that might wipe out our Earth before it happens such as what caused the dinosaurs to go extinct. Climate change is one of those things. Oh, yes, the climate has always been changing but the difference today is that we can do something about it especially “if” (it has) it has been exasperated by our own actions of the industrial age. People like to pretend everything is fine in their bubble. There are no wars in their bubble, no mass shootings, no super bug, etc. Why do you think people want a wall? To keep out the boogey man of course. Anything that might harm their bubble. Maybe they know their bubble isn’t reality—I’m not sure.

Science is important. I can’t stress how important. You can quit talking about climate change but it won’t make the problem go away. It’s a very selfish way to look at things—thinking it doesn’t exist. We should be talking about science more and sharing more facts rather than pretending we have only been on this earth for 6000 years. We have brains. We need to start using them.

Embrace science. Don’t be scared. The universe is beautiful and the more we know, the better we are and hopefully the more we appreciate what we have and will take better care of it.

Responsibility

epa-symbol-2a

I spent part of my evening talking about how important the EPA is to all people. It seems that people think the EPA is too restrictive and should be banned all together. I tried to refresh the minds of old and teach some of the minds of young how for many, many years we (my family) could not eat fish from the Savannah River. Mind you that I didn’t live at the mouth which is far worse.

I’m not going to tell you how mercury gets into the fish and what all can happen like what type of detrimental effects there are on the human body. You can look that up yourself if you don’t know. Much of the toxins that cause mercury poisoning came from the Savannah River Site. We would fish some miles downstream until it was determined the fish were not safe to eat. Of course bottom feeders tend to have a higher concentration and my oh my—I love catfish.

Now, this is just one level of monitoring done by the EPA and such agencies. If it weren’t for the EPA, we would have deadly smog (amongst other things). We still do but it would be much worse because what company is going to police itself if no one calls them out? None.

There are coal ash ponds around and there are companies still using coal. There is a river in Alabama that has this problem right now. The pugs—sorry, I can’t help it—don’t want regulations. They just want to make money whether it is coal energy or other fossil fuels … in pipelines that can spill and believe me—they will eventually leak and spill. So much I can say…I’m frustrated that we are doing things that will harm ourselves.

These government regulations are seen as bad for business. Guess what else they think is bad? Minimum wage. Time off. Having to answer to anyone. Hmmm. See the pattern. For the party who claims they want responsibility, they don’t.

I would like to thank the River Keepers for helping to keep us safe. It is their diligence that has led to a better and cleaner environment for all. There are many people to thank but we all need to get involved. If we don’t look after her – Mother Earth – who will?
